Thanks to its freshness, strong fruit expression and soft tannins, Garnacha is experiencing a kind of rediscovery throughout the world. At Koyle we incorporated it ten years ago, planting it in the highest part of our vineyard located in Los Lingues. The soils of the Cerro Basalto of volcanic origin with a high concentration of iron give an elegant and unique expression to this 100% Garnacha wine that is launched with the 2018 vintage.
This variety of supposedly Spanish origin - recent studies have shown its existence in Cerdeña for 3,200 years - is very versatile. It adapts very well to poor soils and withstands heat. It is also a very productive variety that can even be cultivated in soils 2,000 meters above the sea level.
Planted in high density – 8,000 plants/ha – in the highest part of the Cerro Basalto, with a northwest exposure, its roots move tortuously to absorb the minerality and freshness of the volcanic rock. It undergoes little irrigation to fully express the origin.
Optimal maturity comes early in March. The grapes are hand-picked and carefully selected in the cellar. The vinification is carried out in small stainless steel tanks and the extraction is only carried out with manual pressing to obtain the best extraction of aromas, flavors and silky tannins. Aging is done in concrete eggs to better protect fresh aromas.
Thanks to this careful winemaking, a Garnacha is born with a delicate nose, marked by a wide variety of fresh red fruits. In the mouth it is vibrant, with silky and lasting tannins.
Cerro Basalto Garnacha 2018 has the Ecocert, Demeter and Vegan certifications that verify its organic, biodynamic and free of ingredients of animal origin, respectively.
